William married Jane Jolly on 29 May 1824 in St Clements Parish, Cornwall, England.   Jane was born about 1795 in Newlyn East, Cornwall, England and died on 25 Jan 1862 in Bosvigo Lane, Truro, Cornwall, England aged about 67.

Elizabeth Jane Knight lived at 3 Lower Rosewin Row, Truro

The first houses built (from 1805) along what is now called Rosewin Row were intended for prosperous families in town, and they were sited up the hill so that pleasant views could be enjoyed over Truro.  In time there was need for less expensive housing in the area.  Middle and lower Rosewin Row were built to meet this need.  In all of the houses, a space for a front garden was provided, but the inhabitants of Higher Rosewin Row had a wider, cobbled road in front of their front doors in their carriages.  A footpath ran in front of the homes in Middle and lower Rosewin Row.  The better quality homes were built of stone with slate roofs (as was Elizabeth Jane's, it appears.)  Cob (a mixture of clay, gravel and straw) was used in the poorer houses.  Many of the houses in Rosewin row have been reconstructed and the poorer ones were pulled down during slum clearance work in Truro in the 1930's.

William Henry Knight was born about 18 May 1834 in Prospect Place, Kenwyn, Truro, Cornwall, England, England, was christened on 18 May 1834 in St Clements, Cornwall, England, and died on 4 Nov 1903 in Truro, Cornwall, England aged about 69.

Mary Knight was born about 25 Dec 1842 in Truro, Cornwall, England, was christened on 25 Dec 1842 in Truro, Cornwall, England.

William next married Ann Bray after 1871. Ann was born in 1823 in Truro, Cornwall, England and died in Sep 1888 in Truro, Cornwall, England at age 65. Alternative Marriage date: Abt. Sep 1868.

James Knight is known to have lived at Paul's Row in Truro, but we do not know at which number.  It, too, is built on a hill, and has grander and lesser ends.  Among the residents in the 1850's and 1860's were a dairyman, a miller, a mine broker, an accountant, a builder, St Mary's organist, and the proprietor of the Academies for fashionable dancing.

City Couple Critical After Residence Fire

An elderly Great Falls couple rescued from their burning residence early Wednesday was reported in critical condition at the Deaconess Hospital Wednesday night.

Elmo Knight, 74, 3615 9th Avenue South, suffered from smoke inhalation and first and second degree burns on his arms and back and his wife, Val, 72, also suffered from smoke inhalation in a blaze which caused an estimated $40,000.00 damage to the couple’s residence and its contents. According to the Great Falls Fire Department, the fire which started in the rear of the residence where the kitchen, ceramic room and utility room are located, was reported at 6:44 a.m. Fireman said that by the time they reached the scene, a neighbour, identified as Waldo Moberly, 3609 9th Avenue South, had pulled Mrs. Knight from the front portion of the residence. Fire chief Kenneth Lundstrand said Captain Michael Servoss and probationary fireman Neal Menghini, entered the residence and found Knight on the floor about 20 feet from the front door. Lundstrand said firemen were at the scene almost 3 hours and used 5,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. The blaze was confined to the back portion of the residence but the entire house sustained water and smoke damage. Lundstrand said Wednesday night the cause of the fire had not been determined and the fire remains under investigation

Contribution by Bessie’s Granddaughter

Bessie Knight worked as a cook in the employment of Lady Protheroe Smith.  She met her husband, William Thomas there, when he was employed on the same property as a gardener.  The family believes that the Protheroe Smith property was on a hill called St Swithen's Hill.  No-one in Truro, though, when we visited in 1999, seemed to know of a St Swithen's Hill.

Lady Protheroe Smith lived in Truro.  She was the wife of Philip Protheroe Smith, Vice-Warden of the Stannaries (1839-1882) and Mayor of Truro on four occasions, who was knighted in 1880. (His elder brother was a Conservative M.P. for Truro in 1859 and subsequently became a Lord Justice.)  In 1845 they built a large house called "Tremorvah" in Agar Road, Truro.  Lady Protheroe Smith continued to live there for many years after the death of her husband, and it is now (1999) used as the offices of The Cornish Mutual Insurance Company.  The original 45 acres have been sold over the years for housing development.  It is situated just off the A39 road into Truro, near traffic lights which are at the top of the hill.

Bessie bought a farm at Didcot, which she called "Penrose", before her eldest daughter, Bessie, was married.   Her three older children, Fred, Willie and Ethel went down to the farm with her.  The younger children stayed with her daughter Bessie in the railway house.

Bessie's daughter, Bessie, at first called the farmhouse that she and her husband Edward ("Ted") Gilmer built in Antigua, "Tremorvah", but the name was eventually dropped.  Oddly, the name which the family most associates with Bessie Knight is not "Tremorvah", but "Penrose.

Bessie emigrated to Australia in 1891, to Maryborough, Qld, Australia.

Her granddaughter, Ellen, remembers Bessie telling the family that when she was 18 years old, she saw Queen Victoria passing by.  Bessie was watching from an upstairs window, and said that the queen was "a great lady."  She also told Ellen that she, Ellen, was "a bold child" ("so I was," said Ellen).  But later, when Ellen was the mother of twin babies, Bessie came to visit her and remarked that she was a "very good girl" then, and that Bessie wouldn't have been able to have managed it.

She worked for Lady Protheroe Smith, as a cook.  Her husband-to-be, William, worked as a gardener on the same estate.   She was William's second wife.

Bessie's great granddaughter remembers her as an old lady.  She was small, active, and given to wearing long dresses and black hats.  Her memory had failed by then.  Her Great Grandchildren thought that she was great fun to be with, but clearly the rest of the family who were caring for her then had a difficult job. One of her Granddaughters remembers that she spent 5 years in hospital with senile dementia before she died.

Living Male

Muriel Dulcie Gilmer was born on 11 Jul 1924 in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia and died on 4 Jan 2009 in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia at age 84.

Bessie left school at 14.  About this time her family transferred from Aramara, where her mother was station mistress.  Young Bessie then became a railway gatehouse keeper, too, and the family lived in the railway house.  Bessie opened up various railway offices as the railway line progressed to Gayndah, Dappil, Iderway, Byrnestown and Gooroolba.  She was living in Gooroolba at the time of her marriage, and left in 1918 for Takura, where the family lived until after the birth of her youngest, Muriel, who was born in 1924.

In August 1924, the family shifted to their farm in Antigua.

In the 1990's, Doris and family called in to Gooroolba to see the railway station and house where Gran spent so many years as station mistress.  They found that both the house and the station had been pulled down - a great disappointment to them.

Bessie could ride very well, when she was a young woman.  She rode side saddle, but when she left home to marry, her mother would not let her take the saddle with her.

She was indefatigable and worked very hard.  A granddaughter remembers her in long dresses going down to clear stumps in the paddocks around the house.  She would single handedly drag heavy logs and stumps into heaps, before burning them.  Before she began her day's work in the paddocks, she would rise with first light and organise a huge breakfast - home cooked buns, home made marmalade and butter, for breakfast, with big jugs of milk and pots of tea readily available.  Her husband used to send up fresh steaming milk and cream from the morning's milking.  He used to think it was very healthy for his grandchildren to have a glass of milk, warm from the cow.  Bessie had a very large, heavy black wood fired range in the kitchen.  Then was always hot water boiling on the side of the range.

There were leisure moments, too.  She would take her grandchildren down into the dark scrub, past the cane fields, to fossick in the bush and to find Scrub turkeys' nests.  She was at ease there, and quite proud of her granddaughters' ability to spot things like small wildflowers, or to recognise changes in the environment since the last visit.

She always gardened, and had a beautiful garden at Antigua.  She and Grandad moved to Antigua in August 1924, and by that time had 4 children. She had an orchard to the side, which included orange trees.  She established a lush fernery underneath the stairs and a flower garden in the front.  It had rectangular and square beds, with no lawn.  The paths were gravelled.  She grew excellent roses, including a green one, of which she was very proud.  When droughts wiped out her garden, she would begin again, ordering new roses from a firm in Bundaberg.  The only available water was tank water, and household water was recycled for the garden.  Scarlet bougainvillea grew over the tank stand.  A distance from the house there was a pink Oleander wind break, mango trees and Macadamias.

Bessie’s cremated remains were buried with her first born, Mary, at Maryborough Cemetery.

William John Thomas was born on 13 Oct 1895 and died on 6 May 1958 at age 62. William married Clara Johnson in 1919.

Ellen Ruby Gilmer was born on 10 Jul 1919 in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia and died on 6 Jan 2005 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia @ 0500 Hours at age 85. Ellen married Francis Henry Berry on 24 Dec 1942 in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia.   Francis was born on 24 May 1917 in Waratah, Tasmania, Australia and died on 22 Nov 1974 in Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia at age 57.

BERRY: - Ellen Ruby (nee Gilmer), 1919 - 2005. Passed away peacefully on 6th January 2005, in the loving care of Cooper House Staff, Wheller Gardens, Chermside. Loved by Husband Frank (decd) and Daughters … and their Families. Loved Sister of Mary (decd), Doris, … and Muriel. Ellen’s Funeral will be held on Tuesday, 11th January, at 2 p.m. in the Cannon & Cripps Chapel, 270 Kelvin Grove Road, Kelvin Grove. No Funeral Cortege

Ellen and Frank met by chance when Frank was stationed outside Maryborough, Queensland, at Teddington, as a Corporal in the Australian Imperial Forces, in the 4th Brigade of the 22nd Battalion, in August 1942.  Frank had evidently missed his last bus back to camp, and he stopped Ellen on the footpath and asked her if she knew the way back to camp.

She knew him for just six weeks before his Brigade was moved to Nambour, yet they kept in touch, and was married on Christmas Eve, 1942.  It was a very quiet wedding.  Guests who attended were Ellen's parents, her sister, Doris, and her employer, Mr Hughes and his children Marjorie and (we think) Frank.  It was the first wedding of a World War II serviceman in the Anglican church of St Paul's Maryborough. Ellen wore a short light blue dress, an off white straw hat and white peep toe shoes.  She carried a bouquet of blue hydrangeas and nandina, tied with ribbon.  She had “something borrowed, something blue; something old, something new”.  Her “something borrowed” was a marquisite butterfly brooch which was lent to her by her sister, Doris. Frank was married in uniform.  They honeymooned in Pialba.  Frank had a week's leave.

Frank then left almost immediately with his Battalion for an 18 months tour of duty in New Guinea.  Ellen returned to her domestic job with the Hughes family, who owned a pharmacy in Maryborough.

Esme Doris Gilmer was born on 31 Oct 1920 in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia and died on 23 Oct 2007 in Nambour, Queensland, Australia @ 1055 Hours at age 86. The cause of her death was Dementia. Esme married and produced three children.
