Walter was employed in J.C. & J. Field Ltd, candle and soap manufacturers of Lambeth, a very old firm which does not exist today. Alfred James. and two other related family (Edgar & Harold) were also employed. Walter had a very good job for those days, but became involved with some shady people who were going to make his fortune. Something went wrong however and he lost all his money and finally was practically sacked by the firm on a very small pension for the rest of his life. It may have been that these people were not crooks, but were just unlucky, and that there really was a chance of making a fortune. Anyhow it didn’t come off. Walter died in 1915 during the 1st World war in reduced circumstances. His wife Caroline (nee Hallaway) died 9 months preceding him. There was apparently no love lost between them, and evident that none of his sons or daughters favoured him in later life.
